What are the risks of microneedling?
A risk list is only useful when it says which version of the treatment it covers.
Our position on a risk list
We will not give you our own list of risks. The sources below describe what is known, and your provider can tell you how those apply to you. Your job is to confirm which type of microneedling each source is talking about.
Which microneedling each source describes
Microneedling is not one thing on a menu. The Cleveland Clinic page on microneedling and the AAD page on microneedling for scars and tone describe the basic procedure and its uses.
Two research papers go into more detail. The dermatology review of applications, techniques and outcomes covers the technique broadly. The review of radiofrequency microneedling complications and efficacy looks at radiofrequency microneedling, which is labelled separately. Check whether a risk described for one variant is being applied to another.
Four questions for the consultation
- Ask which device and which type of microneedling will be used.
- Read the sections on risks and aftercare in the sources above for that type.
- Tell the provider about your skin history and any medicines you take.
- Ask what happens if you have a reaction and who to contact.
The footnote on professional judgment
This site lines up published descriptions and gives no medical advice, so for anyone near Medina a licensed provider who has examined your skin is the right person to discuss risk.
