Botox and neurotoxins

Topic intro

"Botox" is a brand name, and "neurotoxin" and "neuromodulator" are the category words that sit around it. Treatment menus tend to use all three, sometimes as if they meant the same thing. This page lines the terms up so you can see which one a quote is actually naming.

Two sources help with vocabulary. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons description of the botulinum toxin procedure is one, and a dermatologic surgery society covers the same ground under the heading neuromodulators. Reading the two side by side shows how the same category gets named differently depending on who is writing.

Expert guidance

We have not tested any product ourselves, so nothing here is a claim about results. What we can do is point to where the footnotes are. The National Library of Medicine's Botox entry is a public health reference on the drug. The same society also publishes a question-and-answer piece on Botox.

Before booking, ask the provider to name the exact product, say whether it is a brand-name or another neurotoxin, and explain who will perform the injection. This is a comparison page and not a clinic, so questions about your own health history, including anything on the list of who should not get injections, belong in a conversation with a licensed provider.
